A muralist with a passion for vintage cars embarks upon one of the last great American road trips in one of the last great American cars. Driving a 1967 Ford Fairlane Ranchero across the US and back again, Canadian artist Bill Wrigley chases adventure and history in this documentary about the search for meaning in contentious times.

Talking Freedom is a feature-length film in production, produced by and featuring Canadian artist Bill Wrigley. It is directed, shot and edited by Lisa Santonato.

Soundtrack to the teaser: Minas de Cobre (acoustic version) by Calexico.

Happy Birthday to FTP

Posted by on Jan 6, 2011 in FTP Media News

On this day in 2000, ftpmedia.com was born. To celebrate and commemorate the end of a decade of FTP Media, I have re-posted the original web video created during a residency at the Canadian Film Centre in 1999. My objective was to use digital video technology to tell a story that would effectively a) be meaningful, thus compelling, in order to therefore b) demonstrate a successful application of video produced online.

Created with Apple video samples shipped with the new macs and Super 8 home movie footage to tell the story of my awakening, this video documents my experience with cancer in 1993 via home movie footage combined with a narration based on journal entries written during that time. This is the most personal project I have produced to date, singularly different – on both an emotional level and on a content level – from anything else I have completed since. Enjoy.

Italian-Canadian / In Cammino con Amore

Posted by on Sep 12, 2001 in Portfolio, Short Films

Lucia and Serafino Santonato were married in the town of Patrica, Italy, province of Frosinone, on September 12th, 1931. This video features an interview with Lucia and Serafino in advance of their 70th wedding anniversary in 2001.

The interview was conducted by my father Lou and is spoken in Italian, in the Patricano dialect, with English subtitles added. The video also includes Super 8 home movie footage shot by my father in Toronto, Canada in the sixties with some footage also shot by my grandfather Serafino when he returned to visit Italy for the first time since emigrating to Canada in 1950.

I produced this short documentary in September 2001 in honour and celebration of my grandparents’ 70th wedding anniversary. I am uploading it today (January 2011) to remember their life and love in the tenth anniversary year of their last anniversary together. This year would mark their 80th anniversary. Rest in peace, Nonna and Nonno. We love you.
