Back in the summer of 2006, not long after I joined YouTube (begrudgingly, as I had originally intended for ftpmedia.com to be a video file sharing site), I uploaded a drag queen performance video I shot surreptitiously with my little Canon PowerShot one night.
It was at Toronto’s famous El Convento Rico nightclub. It was a Saturday night, and not just any Saturday night. It was the night of my sister’s stagette. El Convento Rico is a popular nightclub for a diverse crowd mainly because it is really a spectacularly fun way to spend an evening. The weekly Saturday night drag queen contest is highly competitive and entertaining. I videotaped two performances on this night, one of Irene Cara doing “Fame” and the other which I am posting here: Tina Turner doing “Proud Mary”. Unfortunately I do not know the performers stage names or I would credit them here.
To my surprise, the ‘Tina Turner’ YouTube video quickly amassed over 30,000 views, probably because folks landed on it thinking they were going to be treated to the real Tina Turner singing “Proud Mary”. At least that’s what the arguments in YouTube comments suggest!
I really didn’t know at the time how many hits this could get as YouTube had only launched about a year and a half before. Interestingly, on October 16, 2006 (only 10 days before this video was uploaded), YouTube was sold to Google, Inc. for $1.65 billion. [Wikipedia] Today, YouTube remains the second-largest search engine in the world, after Google.
I still enjoy watching this performance, it really is remarkable and quite fun. The performer does a great job impersonating Tina, and I had a great time capturing the performance live on that weeny little PowerShot.
Watch the video here, and “like” it if you do. The show really takes off around the 02:04 mark…
